Be a Pet-Friendly Landlord or Run a Pet-Friendly Business

If you rent property, operate a hotel, or manage a business, please consider making your establishment pet-friendly. People with pets are often the most loyal and responsible of tenants, and welcoming them to your property can significantly increase your pool of applicants. Same goes for hotel guests. If you are worried about damage (even though some children, students, and other humans can cause at least as much damage as a pet), you can always hold a security deposit. In addition, you can provide a written agreement outlining your requirements, such as keeping dogs leashed and picking up waste.

Other businesses can benefit from being pet-friendly as well. Studies have shown that having pets in the office can help employees’ wellbeing and possibly even increase creativity (This article talks about one study; this one talks about another, and this one refers to a popular survey.) Most importantly if you love animals, being a pet-friendly business operator means that you are doing your part to help people adopt and keep pets!

Promote Pet-Friendly Amenities

If you are a home builder or designer, include pet-friendly amenities like dog wash areas, mudrooms, or screen porches. If you are involved in community design or neighborhood planning, prioritize green spaces, wide sidewalks, waste receptacles, etc. Some apartment communities are even offering off-leash dog parks and community dog wash areas.
